Because I finished my vocational training with an “A,” I was named Germany’s best Staples apprentice and was able to visit the Staples Home Office in the U.S. After that impressive trip, I began my advanced training where I led a subsidiary store for 12 months. Finally, I became a real Store Manager in Bremen.
After opening the store at 8 am, I check out the sales and the accounting figures. Every day I try to coach employees on the German version of “inspired selling” as part of their development. I also motivate them and act as a role model, because if I expect something from them I have to stand behind it too. And it works, too — recently we were voted International Staples Store of the Year.
This year, we brought a sensational project to life when two of the strongest stores in Germany were led by our apprentices for a month. All associates and the Store Managers had to leave their stores and 30 apprentices took over. That really proved how much Staples trusts these young people as they help them to become the leaders of tomorrow.
I’ve been a Picker with Staples since 1998, which just goes to show how much I love it here. It’s a great place to work, and everyone is really nice.
Nothing beats the satisfaction of doing your job and getting it right — every time! Staples has given me plenty of training over the years, so much so in fact that I’ve now stepped into the teacher’s shoes and coach my fellow associates.
Because we genuinely care about our customers, it makes our job easy. One time all the power went out. But did we close for business? Absolutely not! We charged up our flashlights and picked, packed and shipped our socks off so everything arrived on time and our customers were happy.

Before I joined, I’d heard great things about Staples. So with my friend’s endorsement ringing in my ears, I applied for Divisional Sales Manager. The rest, as they say, is history. I’ve gone through a series of promotions within retail since then, and I’m now an Inbound Supervisor.
While I have plenty of time to spend with my kids, I can never forget about Staples because I have two Easy Buttons (in French and English) at home. We press them when there’s cooking, cleaning and homework to be done — which actually isn’t always easy…school is tough these days!
When I joined Staples, I had just graduated and wanted a part-time job to tide me over while I looked for a way to start my career. Little did I know I’d already found it.

I’ve experienced some amazing things at Staples, and, even better, I feel I’ve played a big part in making them happen. My biggest achievement has been winning the Innovation Award. I submitted an idea for the Tech centre, which initially didn’t make the final cut. However, I was so sure that it would help our customers that I set it up in store anyway, and tested prices. The service took off and we expanded to other locations. At this point Staples recognized how useful the Express tech service was and rolled it out nationally. Now that was really cool.
There’s never a dull moment at Staples — days fly by because it’s so busy. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but that’s exactly why I love being part of this organization. We are a very driven company that makes the most of each workday.
Little did I know that when I was hired as an HR Manager, some 10 years later I would be Director of Global Diversity and Inclusion. And while I’ve worked hard to progress in my career, I also owe my success to the many great managers who have respected my abilities and given me countless opportunities to strut my stuff.
And I got to strut my stuff in an entirely different sense when we sponsored a “Move your Body” campaign. We spent weeks secretly practicing one of Beyoncé’s routines before the final dance-off. The audience of over 300 associates went wild. Of course, some one recorded it and the next day we were a YouTube sensation — not that I’m going to share the link here, though!
There’s a saying that goes, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got” — which is why we’re always changing and looking for new ways to be successful.
My day revolves around people. I start by collecting data and reviewing any feedback we’ve received. I then travel around stores and coach our associates. I’ll also take the time to speak to our customers so I can make sure we’re meeting their needs.
I’d heard Staples was a fun place to work, but since I joined I’ve found that it has plenty to offer for a serious career, too. While I started as a part-time Cashier, I’ve worked my way up to General Manager and have been named 2011 Business Woman of the Year. Along the way I’ve held positions in nearly every in-store department and have had plenty of training from mentors and Managers. It just goes to show that Staples is a company that really cares about its people’s success.
We took teambuilding to another level when I parachuted out of a plane with my fellow associates. It was an incredible experience, if a little scary. But I’ve got more to show from my time at Staples than just a video of me falling through the sky. I’ve learned Italian and got a Black Belt too (in processes, that is).
In 1997 I’d just completed my degree in IT and was looking for a company where I could apply to “real life” all I’d learned. I definitely made the right decision, because in just a few years, Staples had rapidly expanded. When I moved into the European IT team I realized how much I loved being in an international environment. And since then Staples has given me the chance to work in America, France and Italy.
Wherever I am in the world, easy is about keeping it simple, using common sense and not overanalyzing situations. The best solution is often the simplest.
